Can anyone identify this?

It's everywhere ... under my trees, in the grass, in the garden. It's hardy as hell and if you step on a sprout barefoot, it hurts. I literally tripped over one. The root system is crazy thick and looks like an octopus with 29 billionty arms. I have looked everywhere and asked everyone I know and no one knows.

I don't think it is a wandering jew since it is growing in the yard like a weed.

It is possible. Is it a monocot? Orchids will bloom but sometimes only once a year. Definition of an orchid. The flower has three petals and three sepals. All orchids are monocots. They grow from rhizomes.

It may be some kind of ladyslipper orchid.

However, you said the plants stay small and these orchids get quite tall.
