Day Lilly question

I am doing a garden effect where I would like to "stair step" some Day Lillies in a rockbed. It may be a temporary set up and I don't want soil eroding between the rocks.

If I cut the bottom out of the container the Lilly is in, will it thrive with the roots free to establish in the soil below even tho the sides of the root ball are still confined by the container?

Actually roots grow down and sideways. If you mulch with bark the soil may not erode unless you get a downpour. I would take the plant totally out of the pot. They are easy enough to transplant except when blooming.
