Clematis Q's

Hi All,

I put in 4 Crystal Fountain Clematis (2 per 3' x 6' trellis) this past spring. I was told not to expect much out of them the first 2 or 3 years, but they almost filled the trellises and shot a few blooms over the summer. Problem is, now the leaves are yellowing and there are dead zones in each one. I'm wondering if it's normal for these to die back in winter in zone 9b. All the vids I've seen talk about the northern climates...

Well, after cutting them back, year two looks much better. I do have one unanticipated problem though. Three of the four are prolific in flowering and climbing, while one is "stuck" at ground level. It has greened up and spread horizontally a bit, even has a couple flowers, but is not climbing. All four receive the same treatment. I'd ask for ideas, but since my original post had zero answers...
