Dahlia tuber with really long eye

I recently planted a dahlia tuber that I bought. I was told to plant it with the eye sticking a little bit out of the dirt if it was long enough. This tuber had a really long eye, maybe 12 inches. I coiled up the eye and planted it with the top sticking out as the instructions said.

I'm wondering if I did it right. Should I have trimmed the eye? Should I have had the eye as far out of the dirt as it would go?
