Amaryllis - Cousin's concern VS Natural environment

Fri Mar 31, 2017 11:20 pm

My amaryllis bloomed beautifully(Louisville, Kentucky) after nine long, chilly weeks of dormancy followed by speedy growth. Four blossoms on one stem, it stands almost two feet tall! However, my cousins fear the Spring rainstorms and high winds of the river valley pose a danger to the flowers. So, when I put it outside in the afternoon on my days off, they bring it indoors if it's raining and I'm at work on the following days; they believe the rain will "knock the petals off"... I understand they are worried, but it's a flower. Outside is where it should be(if warm enough. [: ). If I keep it from falling over, will it be okay?

Yes, the rain will ruin the flowers. The best would be to have the plant indoors while the flower is beautiful and set it outside after the flower fades. Just remember to bring it indoors before the weather turns cold again in the fall. Another alternative is to cut the flower stalk and put it in a vase. They last just a little longer in a vase, in my experience.
