Growing a fig tree
Hello everyone, this is my first post, last year I planted a fig tree, and I have since learnt that I should have restricted the roots, can anyone tell me why this is so, and how and when can I do it.
Hi Runnerbean,
Welcome to the Helpful Gardener! There are many different kinds of fig trees, some considered ornamental and others that have fruit. Do you know which type you planted and maybe the scientific name? If it's an ornamental such as Ficus benjamina aka weeping fig, these trees get huge root systems.
I'm thinking you live in the UK, is that correct?
