How/when to prune ?

As far as when to prune, you missed your window of opportunity. Azaleas are pruned soon after they finish blooming, in early summer. By now, it has set the buds for next year's flowers and you would be pruning them off.
One question I would ask is why prune? How to prune depends on why you are pruning. Has it gotten too big for the space? Has it gotten sparse/ lanky?
Otherwise, azalea doesn't really need much pruning, just trim off long stray shoots.
