Looks to me like a variety of amaranth. Some are edible, some ornamental only.

Cynthia I was hoping someone would say that! If it is an amaranthus then I can maybe find some seeds the birds haven't scoffed. The only thing is that the pictures I can find all have green plants and red heads, not red stems. I've looked at love lies bleeding (too upright), mexican grain (too wide) and purple amaranth (too tall).

You have also answered my other question; can we eat all of them. My brother uses amaranth in some dishes (he is a chef) so I thought of growing it for him. But I can't find the seeds for growing here.

If I can get him to actually bring some back from the restaurant then I could try with that but he's useless so in the mean time I will keep looking.
