clematis

Is this normal for clematis to do this?

I've never had this plant before so I know nothing about it. It turned all brown and the flowers withered after blooming and I assumed it was done. But then some new green and flowers up at the top?

Could be clematis wilt ~ a fungus. Cut out the affected area to the root (the disease does not affect the roots so the plant shouldn't die). Dispose of the diseased stems, NOT in your compost. I have also heard that spraying with a mixture of one part whole milk to nine parts water will help deter fungus, or try neem oil.

ETA ~ you could also try applying a systemic drench product that is absorbed into the plant and deters pests and disease (NOT for use on edible plants).
