amaryllis won't bloom

My friend has an amaryllis in a pot. It has a large bulb and healthy green leaves, but it has not bloomed for 3 years.
Amaryllis does well in a pot or in ground here. It blooms in the cool months.
The plant does not normally shed leaves and go dormant, and the plant will bloom with or without leaves. Mine bloom, why not hers?

>>in a pot

this may be one clue - they need to be fed after blooming and the leaves need to be kept. the feeding is needed to develop a new bud inside the bulb, and the leaves provide the energy to do that.

I've hear two theories for the "rest period" - one is: not needed, the other is to allow to dry - but not bone dry - and go dormant - leaves die back, etc.

I've always done the dormant routine - weekly feeding with a weak tea, followed by 3-4 months of dry storage. but that was in a greenhouse, bottom shelf, essentially daily attention to moisture.....

Thanks for the clue Dillbert. I will ask my friend what she's been feeding the amaryllis.
