several questions on phlox

I planted some phlox a few weekends ago and they are looking a bit sad. Some of the purple flowers are dying on them..is that normal for it not to bloom very long? Also, I was thinking I should have broken up the big ones and planted them closer so they take less time to grow together--can I dig up one or two and still do that? I'm hoping they like our soil, it's very hard clay but I broke it up and added compost and topsoil before planting. Oh, one final question--I wanted to plant some daffodils or other bulbs in the middle of the two patches..when they grow together will the bulbs be able to break through?
Thanks!!

Yes daffs will break through but plant in the fall. The odds are great is that there are air bubbles when you back filled. Tamp the soil down with the end of your shovel.
