Monkshood (Aconitum napellus) Pictures

https://xrl.us/rze3

30 Septermber 2006 My Monkshood is blooming now. It is about five feet tall and healthy. The name is appropiate, since the flowers have the appearance of a monks cowl as shown in pictures of the middle ages. This plant is two year old. It is a fall bloomer. I have it in a remote area of the garden. They are often sold in garden houses in pots, and I am rather astonished that they seldom if ever have caveats.

Interesting Facts:
All parts of monkshood are poisonous, especially the roots and seeds, and the flowers if eaten. In the past, wolves and criminals were poisoned with an extract from the European wolfsbane Acontium lycoctonum, a close relative of our monkshood. This species was also supposedly used as a component in witches’ brews. Our monkshood has similar chemical properties and contains the alkaloid aconitine.

CAUTION: This plant is POISONOUS!
