I thought they were perennials

So walmart has out their bulbs now and I'm so excited! I noticed on the package they have the bulbs listed as annuals or perennials. I thought it was strange that the Gladiolus and Iris bulb packages were marked as annuals...(not by walmart employees but by the company that distributes them) I thought for sure they were both perennials. Whats up with that? Are only certain varieties annuals? I don't want to buy them if they arent going to come back next year. Thanks!

As far as I know all iris are hardy perennials; I don't know why they would be marked as annuals.

Gladiolus comes in different varieties. Some are cold hardy and some are not. So the not-hardy ones are actually tender perennials, but they are often grown as annuals. The other alternative would be to dig the bulbs up at the end of the season and store them indoors.
