Help! Every time a flower stalk shoots up and gets close to blooming something is eating only the flower bulb. It looks as if someone has cut the stalk. Anyone else having this problem with agapanthus?
You most likely have lubbers. In your area, they would have started as small black and red grasshoppers, but now they are 3-4 inches long and yellow, black, green with pink wings. They'd chow down on any of my large flower buds: agapanthus, day lily, crinums, and probably others.
Be ruthless. Carry pruners with you and clip the lubbers in half whenever you see them. They have no concept of sharing the bounty. They're Borg.
