Found some tobacco sticks last week(600 of them) 60 to 75 yrs old and all from oak, all hand hewed. started a garden fence from them today. got 40 ft done with 60 ft to go. what do you think ? heres some pictures..

You have a good eye for randomly arranging the height into a pleasing design.

Tobacco is either primed, picked leaf by leaf, or it is whole stalk harvested.
When whole stalk harvesting, you prepare sticks that will reach from one rafter to another in the barn. These are sharpened on one end, then you cut the tobacco stalk and shove the stem on the sharp stick to impale it. Then when the stick is full, you hang it in the barn, and let it complete drying.
In tobacco country they outfit trailers to hold racks of these sticks, and fill them in the field then transfer them to the barn.
Some are heat or flue cured, and some are simply cured by controlling the airflow and humidity in the barn. They stay there until cured, then they are removed from the sticks, the leaves pulled off the stalks, and then they are baled up and taken to auction. The tobacco sticks are carefully put away for the next year.
Tobacco growers have been bought out and encouraged to grow other crops, so the sticks no longer have a purpose, unless some creative person finds a use for them.
