I have some Gailardias to start from seed

I have a plot of land that used to house Lillies. They grew back every year with no problem, and now I have decided to place gilardias there from seed. They are on the east side of my house and I live in northern utah. How should I start them outside so they grow well with not as much sun as they would like.

Everyone has a different procedure but what I do is to plant say in a one gallon container of sand and manure or compost spread some bone meal and put it in the sun in a place that I will see everytime I am outside so I don't forget to water then in the spring or fall transplant.
