What's wrong with my Red Hot Poker???

I just planted it last spring. This spring is the first time it's bloomed. The plant looks healthy....

But the flower (which grew quickly in my opinion) looks like it's dying before it blooms.

What am I doing wrong???

Thanks in advance.

Did you by any chance buy the variety called 'Little Maid'? It has yellow flowers that fade to white at the bottom, just like yours.

Hmmm, I don't know. They were a gift from my brother's girlfriend. I'll send her an email and see if she remembers.

Thanks! I love getting plants as gifts but it worries me if/when I think I've messed them up or worse; kill them.
