purple salvia, will they come back or not?

Hey everyone,
Last year I grew purple salvia from seed. The package said they were perenials, but none of the plants survived. Do these plants come back on the same stock or just reseed themselves? And does anyone know how much cold they can stand? :?
Any help would be nice, thanks!
Have a great spring everyone!

The perennial purple salvia I have 'May Knight' is rated hardy down to zone 3 which I think should cover you.

Are you sure the plant didn't survive? They do die back in the winter time, leaving just a few basal leaves. They come back from the roots in the spring. I don't know how well they reseed. I keep mine deadheaded to keep them blooming, which doesn't give them a chance to set seed.

Mine is now again a big healthy plant covered in flower buds.

Thanks for the advice. I thought they were dead. They pulled out pretty easily. I'm in the process of reworking my bed, so I hope I didn't tear them out prematurely. There wasn't anything left except the dead stalks. And I didn't see any growth on them. Well maybe I'll give them another go.
