mulching around iris rhizomes?

I cleaned up the beds and am laying down mulch. Since the iris rhizomes grow along the surface, I am concerned if I cover them with mulch they might rot- can I cover them, or not?

I would recommend against it. I never put mulch over mine. You certainly wouldn't want to do it this time of year.

If you live in a cold-winter area, you can use a protective mulch over the iris during the cold months. Use something lightweight, like leaves or straw, and remove it as soon as you can once spring arrives.
