transplanting phlox

I just dug up several tall phlox from my friend's garden. They are all about 3 feet tall and the flowers are spent. When I transplant them, should I cut them back or leave them tall?

Can/Should I save the seeds from the spent flowers?

Yes and Yes. Yes cut the stems back by half to let the plant focus more on establishing roots in its new location. Bury the crowns slightly below ground level and mulch well.

Yes you can save the seed. Phlox starts well from seed. If you want it to bloom the first year from seed, start it indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost and then transplant outdoors when the soil has warmed some.
