Help with diagnosing problem with my Sweet Kate spiderwort

We have some Sweet Kates that are in their 2nd year. They were beautiful last year so we purchased some more this spring. Now the year old plants are looking VERY ragged (leaves are turning brown and dying), and even the new plants aren't doing well.

Anyone know of diseases or parasites that are common to this plant?

It would help to know more about what their situation is-- are they in full sun or shade or in between, what kind of soil, how's your climate been lately, very wet, very hot?? etc.

Actually, this has been a "good" spring/early summer, I.e., plenty of rain, but not too much, hot days, but that's expected here. They are planted where they get sun in the mornings till around 1:00 p.m., then are shaded. The soil isn't the greatest, but we've enriched it where our landscaping is planted. They have received a good amount of fertilization as well.
