flox flummoxed

pretty white creeping flox did well for several years in the same spot, but this year its very straggley with few blossoms. Pulled it out, saved what appeared to be viable and am attempting to re-root in vase on windowsill with a few drops of liquid plant food in the water. Am I headed in the right direction?

I use a sand and manure mix with bone meal and that works fine, either let Mother Nature water or I do. Go to https://propagatingperennials.blogspot.com and put in phlox subulata update and you will see the results.
