Dying sunflower seedlings

First time gardener and trying to grown some sunflowers.

The seeds are coming up fine however quit a few of the sprouts are dying off.

I live in Southern California so the temperature is pretty high, but I water diligently and only some of the sprouts are dying. Other are growing fantastically.

Is it because the soil is too sandy/poor? I watered too much? some disease? bad luck? etc.

Any help would be appreciated. :)
