Using Styrofoam Egg Carton for starting seeds?

Hello! :) Have you ever used styrofoam egg cartons to start seeds in? I plan on starting some onions inside soon and we don't have a lot of wider containers. Mostly little butter containers and thats about it. Would egg cartons fall apart after a wguke?

I tried clear plastic egg carton and discovered that onion seedlings send their roots too deep and egg cartons are too shallow. You want at least 3" soil depth. Butter tubs would work -- punch a bunch of holes for drainage.

I don't space onions in a starter pot. I plant a lot of seeds in a 4 inch pot. It will stay there a couple of months before I transplant them out to their final destination. This is late for planting seeds of bulbing onions. Scallion and green onions can be spaced a couple of inches apart. P.S. My onions are blooming now, even the young ones, they are blooming earlier this year.
