Great idea, I thought.

Greetings, We purchased a few tons of alfalfa cubes. Looking at them, I thought almost like soil cubes. So, I, in a six pack, placed two cubes, I had drilled holes and placed broccoli seeds in the cubes, and planted the 4 outside slots in soil.
In just a few days the four seeds in soil had sprouted with no sigh from the cubes. The rest is history the cubes began to smell the greenhouse up. When I dug the cubes out they were bad, even had worms or maggots.

So, I've this lesson to share with you: NEVER DO THIS!.... Not a good idea.

Always better to learn from other people's mistakes! :) Thanks for sharing.

I did put alfalfa in the form of soaked guinea pig pellets, in with my home made potting soil for seed starting, in an attempt to amp up the N level. It didn't get nasty like this (probably because it was a very small proportion of the potting medium), but even so it does have a pretty pungent odor.
