Cold Stratification not required??

Good morning fourm,

I sowed some JAPANESE BLACK PINE seeds about 45 days ago. I did not cold stratify them, I just put them in some turface and kept the substrate moist. A couple weeks later they had sprouted. Its ~45 days later now and my seedlings are about 2-3inches tall and looking great. I bought 200 trident maple seeds now to do a little experiment. I am now scarfiying them and will sow them later today. I believe some seeds will germinate without the need to cold stratify. Those that do germ will acclimate to my zone and not require the needs of that same tree in another zone. Again this is just an experiment to see what happens. I would like to know what everyone thinks about cold strat? Prior to me sowing the JBP alot of what I read said they would not germ without cold strat. I think there is alot of misinformation out there, hopefully I'm wrong. Hope to hear from you more experienced members onthis.
