Soilless seed starting

Do I have to use a soilless medium to start seeds or can I use regular potting soil? I have started the germination process in paper towels if that makes a difference.

I have used a soilless mix for cuttings but never for starting seeds . Seed-starting is what is supposed to be its primary use.

Seeds for my garden plants have been going into a standard potting soil for decades. Perhaps, it would be better if the mix was run thru a finer screen; still, it works fine. But yes, I have had damping off some years in a few containers. Probably could have had that nearly as often with a soilless mix, however.

My advice: Use a good brand - don't go with low quality. And, keep your fingers crossed, just as you would no matter what you are doing with your seed .

I like to add 1/4-1/3 sand even to premium potting mix when starting seeds. Some people use perlite. Some seeds won't germinate in too rich soil and new seed roots are tender.

regular potting mix usually is a soilless medium. Peat moss, compost or other organic source, perlite, fertilizer.... no topsoil.
