Reptile - I have tomato seeds on order. I will be planting them as soon as they come in. I love Trish's wick system - so simple yet so effective. It is still chilly - had frost last week. No real freeze. I moved my work table under the patio cover in a corner. One side is the brick house the other is lattice. I stapled visqueen to the lattice to create a corner. The patio cover will protect my plants from frost. I also have a couple of shop lights that I bought "grow light" bulbs for. If a freeze is predicted I just have to leave the lights on over night. A freak hard freeze I can bring the flats in (not a great idea with my 2 kitties.) or just drape them with dry cleaner bags. IDK. I haven't grown from seed in such a long time that this really is a new treat. I will wait until the end of the month to plant my pepper, cucumber and eggplant seeds. The tomato varieties are new to me and not on the recommended list for south Louisiana so I may be shooting myself in the foot. Don't care. I have a backup plan - I will plant some traditional varieties just to be sure that I have maters this summer. Still working on a plan to make optimum use of my square foot garden. I grow as much as I can vertically at the back of my boxes but with the new tomato varieties G will have to make some new frames for me. Time is flying. He has to get that done soon because he is having knee replacement in Feb. and will not only be useless in the yard/garden but will be the biggest baby imaginable :!: I love that man but he is the WORST  patient imaginable.

Happy New Year One and All :!:

I am going to plant my tomatos in a few weeks. Probably around the 10th -14th. Then I am going to plant peppers in the last days of January to early February. I hope your husbands surgery goes well.

Started my peppers (California Wonder and Jalapeño M) on the first and started my tomatoes (Rutgers and Beefsteak) and Basil today. I planted my Smilax seeds way back in November and still haven't gotten any germination yet (will probably have to wait until this spring or next). I've also got some purslane growing and a celery sprout that was weeded from the onion sprouts at work that my coworker let me keep.

I already started Oregano and Thyme just cause they grow slow. I also have Yacon and Egyptian walking onions under lights. I was thinking about starting some tomatoes and peppers super early cause I know they will not be killed by the cooler whether. However, I don't know if they will even grow much, and if starting them super early has its advantages. Plus, If I start them early the plants will get tall and the stuff I start later will have the light farther away from them.

I only have one light fixture that is 4 foot so I have to make the best use of it. And I hate adding books and other objects to try and balance the light to the plants. Anyway, I am gonna scratch the tomato and pepper idea and start them around the usual time. But I am going to start Celery soon since it takes a while to germinate plus is slow growing. I am gonna direct seed some Dill around Mid-Feb/Early March so that it is a nice size by the time my cukes are ready.
