Direct planting to the garden with the web flat!

I am sure most people know about square foot gardening. Does anyone ever use a web flat to set up a similar square foot garden using the size of the flat directly into the garden area! the raised bed would work great for like herbs with a web flat. It would seperate the herbs or even flowers or lettuce and organize the raised bed! You could even put mulch like a 4 inch border on each flat with the mulch coming to the top of the flat like a puzze!! The flat would have shredded paper at its bottom or a single sheet of news paper so roots could push through and the paper would hold in the soil till it was placed in the garden! Any comments or questions!

It's a interesting idea, but I'm thinking it would take up way to much room in my greenhouse.

Say we use a standard 1020 (10x20) tray as your web tray. Only 2 broccoli would fit in this tray and maybe only 1 plant. That's if we are planting at appropriate final distance apart. Have you looked at James's planting guide. Broccoli should be 12" - 24" appart. I can start 18 - 4" pots in a 1020 flat. Then plant them out after hardening them.

I see your point but this is for the square foot gardner who only has a small raised bed. I would have the flats seperated by a border of mulch a few inches up to 6 inches wide. This would allow closer planting in each box! Also this could be done by using a cold frame to start the boxes in the raised bed a month ahead of time!

The plants could be planted closer and thinned to give the right amount for each flat! It could also be used to start plants in the shade in early spring and added to the raised beds of even directly into a small garden. The advantage is less weeds and a more conformed square foot garden! if I had two zuc plants in a flat and they grew well its better then ten plants that die after having one zuc. I have a plastic bread container with lettuce that I did this with in the garden now and its doing fine.. I started the lettuce a month ago in the shade because the garden soil wa too dry to start lettuce. This method did not disturb the roots!

Confined better spacing with better weed & insect control and soil control may be the answer to this extreme weather conditions every year. A healthier plant is better that a large amount of poor crops! The web flat or something similar and slightly bigger even home made may be the answer! Furring strips with a chicken wire bottom will work even better for the handy man by making a 18 inch square! Most people have all kinds of wood they can make use of!

In my opinion and with my experience with square foot gardening I don't like it and would not try it.

That is what people originally said about square foot gardening and companion planting!

People have been doing square foot gardening and companion planting for hundreds of years in europe  As soon as I heard about it I tried it so I am not that type of person. To me it sounds like a way to waste space.

I have three areas I plant a garden in three different sites miles appart. My biggest and newest garden area is about 40 by 100. I grew more in my old garden this year in 1/10 the area using raised beds and cold frames.

After years of gardening like 50 years I think the raised bed and planters produce more than any other meathod and produce better crops! People that are no experienced with gardening are looking for something simple and hands on that works. I try everything to see how it works and do not say its wrong till I see the ins and outs of it! Each time I do something I learn something that I may use in another area!m

Peat pots have been planted directly into ardens for years with some good results but like someone said watch out for wicking or drying out from peat or paper! Plastic does not wick like peat pots! This weekend I will see how my lettuce is coming in my bread box raised bed planted directly in a bigger raised bed.
