How hot is too hot for seeds?

I had started some more bean seeds a week ago on Friday and they seeded to be doing good. I could see little hills of soil form where the seedlings were about to break through. However the past two days were very hot, 90 degree and higher. Last night I checked on the garden and noticed a very strange small when I was close to the beans (I was actually on my knees leaning over the bed because I was checking the drip line). I dug up one of the beans and it was brown and slimy and very smelly.
Did the high temp and full sun cook my beans? Should I rather start them on a shady spot in jiffy pots like I do with my other plants?
Thanks for any advice.
