Pumpkins in Central Texas

I recently moved to Central Texas and have been researching which seeds to start for my veggie garden. I've read that pumpkins can be pretty tricky down here. Any suggestions?

I really can't help you. The rains in the fall always mess me up in the Hill Country, when it comes to pumpkins.

I do squash, but they don't take as long as pumpkins. If it helps, I like to do vining squash on the outside of my garden. Seems to help keep the critters away. They don't like the squishy of the vines and the spines. Theoretically, it keeps the SVB's from hitting the squash I need to harvest.

SVB, squash vine borer, nasty little critter.

Hopefully, marlingardener will see the post and be able to give you some insight.
