Food and Farming

Fri Sep 24, 2010 11:51 pm

Unless people become natural people, there can be neither natural farming nor natural food.

This is the sentence in the book that floored me the first time, and each and every time I read it. What does this sentence mean to you?

Hmmm.

What is the sound of one mod clapping?

Alright, I'll take a crack at it and let you all dissect that...

I think it means that as long as we are engaged in better living through chemicals and conveniences, we are doomed to a spiralling down of nutritional values in our diets, whether we entertain organic practices or not. That the loss of nature will mean the loss of biologies tha supported our crops whether we knew it or not. Was the mycorhizae supporting our grain needing that "weed" grass we just chemically exterminated? I don't know. Neither do you. Too many assume that someone does know when the answer is no, nobody does.

So natural farming is as much about support of nature as it is about farming. And until people value the former as much as the latter, we will have neither natural farming or natural food. That is the natural person I think F-san speaks of...

Thoughts?
