Growing Tobacco..how to make it taste good

Here we're allowed to grow enough tobacco for personal use..and we tried one year and it grew very well. However when dried and smoked it was awful. Not smooth at all. Made me choke and sputter. I'm not sure whether our problem was in the growing or the drying or if there is something to do to the tobacco after it dries to make milder..(so mods feel free to move if this is the wrong forum)

What needs to be done to tobacco to make it mild?

Found the answer...it wasn't properly fermented. Not sure if I'll try again.

in case anyone is interested

I should quit..but the idea of organic homegrown tobacco without additives makes me feel a little less guilty 8)

I was given some tobacco on a seed train and this is my first time trying it. Mostly just for fun because I am not really sure if we have a long enough growing season. So thank you for the info. I just started the seeds indoor.

Funny thing is no one here smokes at all. We have a couple pipes that have been passed on through the ages to just try it.
