Making Sweet Icicle Pickles

I'm making pickles for the first time in over 30 years. I'm using a recipe that's in the Ball canning book. It says to let the cukes sit in brine for a week in a cool place. I noticed they are getting limp. Is that normal? (I've never made this recipe before) I was wondering about adding some pickle crisp granuals I saw in the store (made by Ball) but not sure if I should or when to add them.
Thanks for any help.

The cukes are pickling cukes I got from Burpee. It didn't call for any lime. I think they're supposed to be that way. I had some store bought ones in the refrig and they were like that. I'm having to learn canning all over again, it's been so long.

Recently I have been pickling and canning.
My favorite book is "The Joy of Pickling" by Linda Ziedrich
I have the Ball Book, Mrs. Wages and 3 others.
Today,I finished making lime green tomatoes-they will be ready in 3 weeks.

I have never used pickle crisp--
