Can anyone recommend a book about...well...soil?

I know it sounds a bit odd, but I'd like to read something that will give me a good basic knowledge on different potting media (hope that's the right phrase), how much to mix together, that sort of thing. I don't know anything about it at all, you see, but I know it's important so would like to learn... thanks for any help.

Are you strictly growing in pots or perhaps raised beds? If you are interested in a raised bed mix the book "Square Foot Gardening" has a great mix that a friend of mine uses in his beds to great results.

This may not be what you're looking for because it is more related to "field" soil, but the book "Building Soils for Better Crops" is fantastic... and is available at the SARE (USDA) web site as a FREE full-color download.

The Helpful Gardener Forum judged it to be so important that we have a whole forum category dedicated to discussing the book, chapter by chapter right here:
