Let me again recommend the Sunset Western Garden Book. There's a good, large-ish section towards the back called "A Practical Guide to Gardening" aimed at new gardeners. Sunset can help *every* level of gardener, from brand-new to quite advanced, which is why it's stayed in print and been updated every four to five years ever since it first came out before the Flood.

One of the gardeners here sent me a Sunset Book and I must say it tells you everything about Gardening.

My wife is looking to put a rock garden on a hill in our backyard. We're in the northeast. Any good books that would have ideas for appropriate plants and designs? (I help with the research and heavy lifting only. She gets the fun jobs!)
