Hydroponic celery

I've grown celery for a number of years - mostly successfully - by both ebb and flow hydroponic and dirt techniques. The hydro, howeve, ends up being very thin stemmed. It's tall and healthy looking and tastes good but most of the stalks are little bigger than a pencil. Any comments or suggestions?

Hi Garland,

I am bumping your post hoping that someone with hydroponic experience can help you.

Good luck

I'm just started growing 1 celery in dirt and 1 Hydro. Both were the cut ends off a store bought bunch. The dirt one has been in soil for a couple of weeks now. Its under a plant and aquarium light. The Hydro was just started 4 days ago.

I don't have any experience with hydro. But I grow celery from seed in the ground every year. It grows well, holds up well to cold, heat, drought, etc. BUT I have the same result of getting very narrow stalks and a lot of leaves. It's OK, the leaves are perfectly edible too, and my garden celery is very flavorful. Still I would love to know the secret to growing celery that looks more like the grocery store stuff.
