Fine tutorial Halfway! You mentioned bringing your existing system under the lights with these two totes, have you given any thought about making it a recirculating system?

It would be super simple to do since you've already got most all the parts and it would make running it over an extended period of time much easier. Instead of checking 3 systems you'd just have to check 1 and water levels would remain constant in each tote. 2 aspects of DWC that can be a hassle eliminated.

Just a thought bro, keep up the great work!

Thanks HG. That's a great point, but I'm not ready for that yet. I think I have it pretty simple for now, but the next step is definately a "hybrid" step.

I saw a cool hybrid system at the hydro shop the other day. It looked like an NFT, but was constructed more like an aeroponic / recirculating system with gutters, but no "slope" or angled flow. Big $, but cool anyway.

Got this up and running last night. Looking forward to the results. I can see very low maintenance with this as it has so little moving parts. I can also see adding a spigot to makes nutrient changes easier. That would be a very easy "tweak" for ease of use. But then again, I am on 51 days with the same nutrient batch in the ebb and flow....I may not be changing it out very often, LOL!

I still can't believe the ebb and flow lettuce is over 2 months old with no end in sight! Same with the basil. It is one thick, bushy plant with incredible smell and taste.

This DWC system will take over duties for the continual lettuce crops and I'll add another half dozen in a month to the other DWC. I'm gonna free up the ebb and flow for more basil and some other herbs. Probably start adding some Asian greens and mesclun mixes as well.

Here is a shot of the DWC as of today. We will begin harvesting tomorrow. I posted a shot of the roots on the blog as well.

I will start the 2nd DWC in about 3-4 weeks for a continuous run.

We have become very accustomed to fresh lettuce at our disposal!

Very nice implementation and result! Are you still running this system? I've found lettuce and herbs will just keep going and going in outdoor grows...until the frost gets 'em - interested in how it works inside.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks newleaf. I actually have 2 side by side running continuously. I am running them to insure I have a continuous supply and getting ready for another round of germination.

No worries with bugs or diseases indoors, so I will keep them going despite having outdoor crops. It is so low maintenance, it would make no sense to shut them down.

I wish I would have discovered this years ago.

Good work halfway! I have a hybrid top drip / DWC system and it is just as low maintenance as yours seems to be! It's wonderful!

Your system looks very good!

Halfway and HydrolifeCA: nice. I love seeing and hearing about these types of setups. Lots to be said for KISS and low maintenance!
