Where would I put it?

OK you folks have my attention and curiosity.
Just starting to *think* about it though... So here's one question:
You have the water pump, the air pump, and the lighting system, sometimes a fan for air circulation as well -- how NOISY does it all get?)

I have flourescents....no noise.

The fan (small oscilating type) and the quiet "bubbling" is all I hear. It is less noisy than the big aquarium upstairs.

Interesting you said that, because I *was* thinking about how noisy aquariums can be. 8)

..but you said upstairs, so your hydro setup is... in the basement?

Excellent point applestar and I guess it depends on what you call noisy. You can go with a flood drain system lit with floro's and all you would hear is the sound of a small fan for air circulation. Or you can go with HID lighting which requires (debatable) air cooling and these can get NOISY. Or anywhere in between. The picture below shows both.

I have a seperate room for my gardens but they are still heard. With out any question the fans for the lights are the noisiest components in my systems. I run speed controls and mufflers but they are still rather noisy if one was sensitive to them.

Lighting is the limiting factor for indoor hydroponics but with increased light comes other costs. LED's are an up and coming alternative to HID's and could (and probably will) re-write how indoor gardens are designed.

I've ran 8" HO Can-Fans and those things sound like a freight train coming down the line, today I run Vortex 4" fans on my HID's and with speed controls and mufflers I can live with the noise.

Great question and look forward to others input.

Hydroguy's system is pretty intensive since he uses HID. He gets the ability to grow ANYTHING and the lighting system is probably the best you can get.

Since I only use floros for starts and lettuce/herbs, I have no need for cooling fans. The only fan used is to provide the stems with strength as they are started and circulate the air for the lettuce. It also drops the temp a degree or two under the lights as floros need to be VERY close to the plants to be effective. It is not a lot of heat, but I try to keep them from bolting. The fan helps.

And yes, I grow in the basement as it stay in the 60's and I have plenty of room. The upstairs aquarium adds a soothing, bubbling to area.
