Plant from creek at park--ID? Also, water garden

I went to a regional park with my kids. They found a little stream and picked up a black water plant with a few green shoots. Took it home in a bucket, of course. When we got out I asked the rangers if we could take it home, they said yes. So it ended up in our house. It was long like a rope, and its leaves looked like an evergreen's but they were soft. It eventually smelled bad so I chopped off the green parts, stuck them in a cup of tap water, and threw away the black part. Green parts have not died (yet?). So what plant is this? I am planning to add the green parts to my aquatic garden.

As to my aquatic garden, I will order a tank that I have put on my list, and put some plants in it, which I have. I have some assorted aquatic plants from the pet store and my mystery creek plant. I also have two good-sized (1 1/2 to 2 inch) marimo moss balls. So can you guys ID my creek plant, or give me suggestions on other things to put in my garden?

Thanks,
AHS

I think it is some kind of water-milfoil. Care advice needed.
