Waterfall Installation Advice

I've been running a small pond (approx 7'x5'x3') for a couple years. I've decided to upgrade it to a waterfall filter. I need a few tips on how to best install.
I am enlarging the pond by 2-3' each direction and am adding an Atlantic Filterfalls 1500 and 3200gph pump.
1. Can the waterfall filter be placed directly on a portion of the liner to avoid spills and plumbing leaks?
2. If the answer to question 1 is no, how do I plumb the pipe from the pump to the filter through the liner?
Any guidance or experience will be greatly appreciated.
