Beginner with Gardenia Bonsai

Hi
I received a Gardenia Bonsai for Christmas. I was told that a few leaves would turn yellow and fall due to shock. The leaves have continued to turn yellow and fall. I bought a moisture guage and have been placing the plant when dry in basin of water for 20 minutes.
can anybody give me advice. When should I fertilize it.

Some leaves do turn yellow and drop especially this time of the year.
Gardenia are fussy plants and I grow them outside. They do not like to be in the dark. They need light. 4-6 hours is good. If it is grown outside in hot areas, it is usually planted on the east side of the house to get morning sun and afternoon shade. They are relatively heavy feeders. I use miracle grow for acid loving plants every two weeks or citrus food every three months or so.

You need to keep an eye on them since aphids love them.
They like to be well drained but evenly moist. They will rot if they get soggy.
