Do indoor zelkovas lose there leaves in the winter?

Hey guys so I have a zelkova and cats that like to eat plants, now the only room that I can keep cat free is in the basement, so I have the zelkova getting light from a grow light. It gets about 12 hours a day on average. Now on halloween one of the cats managed to get into the room and eat half of the leaves off the tree. So I'm just wondering if the rest of the leaves are falling off because off shock or the changing of the season.

Keeping Zelkova indoors is inadvisable. Like Ulmus, they're "outdoor" trees that will almost certainly perish when kept inside. They require dormancy.

I just see your -40 CELSIUS. That IS cold! When it is that cold; I should put it into an unheated garage; and when it gets warmer outside again. What kind of native trees do you have? Pines?
