Lucky Bamboo

I had four pieces of lucky bamboo for years. Just this past month or two, I lost one of them and now the others are turning yellow as well. (They are "planted" in water only...they always have been and were fine) Any idea on what is causing them to yellow and die? I heard they don't like direct light and they aren't in any.

Are you feeding them? They need nutrients other than the Micros that come in your water supply.

what would I feed them? The only thing I have is plant nutrients that you stick in the dirt. (not much is available here by way of purchasing anything).

Where are you located?
Don't you have access to powders that can be mixed with water to fertilize plants?

I live in N. Africa and there isn't much in the way of indoor plant care.

I suggest looking on line and ordering some nutrients for your plants if you can't find them locally.

There's even a liquid you could use in your water!!

There's also the possibility that the water supply has changed. Sure, they can't really thrive on water alone, but the relatively sudden demise might be due to chloramine treatment of the city water supply or something like that.

If nothing else, try using rainwater, or bottled drinking water until you can get some nutrients.

You could also ask a friend who keeps freshwater aquaria for some water they siphon off in water changes. That water will be a little richer in nutrients the plants can use than the water you've been using, plus you already know there are no chloramines in the water.

something I have seen done here to feed water only plants is to use a rather large vase or pot and add a couple of gold fish with an airstone the fish waste adds a lot of nutrients to the water and the airstone provides o2 . all in all a very cool look.
