mold on "hawaiian umbrella tree"

Hello-I am new to this site and to bonsai care.
I have what is commonly called a Hawaiian umbrella tree that came already potted with a moss-like base surrounding the "stump" and small pebbles surrounding that.
I just noticed white mold growing on and around the mossy base.
Any tips/suggestions on how to get rid of this and how to prevent it?
Thanks.

(I keep the bonsai on my desk at my school dorm...
It is relatively dry in the room, and I water about once every week and a half and let it drain out the bottom...)

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like this may be the kind with the glued down rocks. What you should do is remove the rocks and moss from the top, and then repot it into a well draining soil. Inspect the roots during this time. If they are rotted away, best cut them off. If it looks like they're still alive then don't worry. Let us know how it does.

I think what you're talking about is a Schefflera. I have heard them referred to as 'Umbrella Trees'.
If you google Schefflera you will find lots of information on this nice little indoor plant.
