Help with a Ficus

I bought this tree about 4 or 5 years ago and haven't really done anything except for pruning some leaves occasionally.

I'd like to re-pot it into the pot shown in the picture but I'm unsure how to go about it!

The tree is 7 inches tall and the pot that it's currently in is 4 inches tall. I'm not sure if the new pot pictured will work because the one that it's in now is fairly tall...

Here are the questions that I have:

1) Is that pot ok or will that require taking off too many of the roots?

2) What kind of soil should I use? I have read up a little on it but I am looking for something fairly basic... and I don't live somewhere where I can get fancy soil.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks :) :D

Heather,

I think the pot you have chosen will be fine. Read this for some basic information about bonsai soils and re-potting.

If you don't want to go to the trouble of locating the proper ingredients, sieving and mixing your own soil, it can be purchased ready made. Some report being able to purchase it locally or it can be found at numerous on-line concerns. For instance:
