CARMONA BONSAI

Hi all,

I purchased my Carmona bonsai about 2 months ago. New shoots are coming through but the old leaves kept dropping off rapidly (old leaves were turning a brownish colour in the middle). According to one of my books it says you can pinch of all the leaves in early spring/summer so new ones will grow.

So at the moment my Carmona bonsai is leavless. Have I done the right thing/will it grow ok?

Here's some current pictures of the Carmona:

Sam,

If you have new growth coming in I think it should recover from the defoliation. I don't have a Fukien Tea, or a Sageretia either, so you have me at a disadvantage. What caused the problem to begin with though I don't know.

I would be careful about watering, the soil looks to be rather water retentive. Water usage will lessen even more without foliage. Check it daily and when it needs watered do so thoroughly, no half measures. Sorry I can't offer more I don't have too many (sub)/tropical species.

Hey Norm (sorry about the late reply),

Thanks for the advice on the two plants, I appreciate it.

Regarding the Carmona ^ all is going well. About a week after trimming all the leaves off, new buds have come through and are looking healthy and strong.

I feed my bonsai plants as instructed on the bonsai food bottle.

I've changed my watering method slightly. As I'm a beginner, alot of sources say you should soke it in a bowl 10-15mins and allow to drain 10-15 mins etc. I've found I only need to do that if the bonsai is in a really dry condition, just to flush it well with water. I recently read a post on this forum talking about watering methods and I now water by the "It always rains twice" method (water once, wait 15 mins, water again and allow to drain or water a third time). I'm aware not to over water/underwater the bonsai's. I don't go by a routine of watering, the plant will tell me when it needs watering.

Regarding temperature I have a thermometer at the side of the bonsai's and I keep them at a good temperature as they should be. They sit about 3 meters from the window with good sunlight (not direct), and the air in my room isn't stuffy, I keep my room well circulated.

Thanks[/b]
