Winter Squash in South Louisiana

I checked the LSU Ag center bulletin about planting times, but see nothing there. I have some seeds my son brought back from mys sister in Canada a few weeks ago and I am thinking the winter squash will be similiar to a pumpkin. That means I will plant next few weeks.

Anybody from south LA here that grows winter squash down here with soem information????

Winter squash is actually a summer plant and I am afraid that it's too late for you to start with seeds in August. It gets its name because it has a layer of wax looking like frost, or because of this layer of wax, it can be stored for a long time all the way through the winter season.
