Ginger Growth

Hey guys,
I found a ginger root in my cupboard the other day that had what looked like a new ginger root growth on it's side, so I carefully peeled it away and planted it in my garden. I live in Vancouver, BC in Canada. It just rained a lot but is pretty warm...anybody know if it's going to grow? Or if there is anything I should be doing to promote the growth?

Ginger is a tropical plant and needs high humidity and temperatures in the range of 75 to 85 degrees F. If you can provide those requirements in your home or a heated greenhouse, you can grow it successfully in a large pot. Use soil that is very rich in compost. :)

Yes, ginger makes a beautiful houseplant! I've seen photos (haven't had success myself, but my growing skills are more oriented to the outdoors--I can KEEP houseplants alive, but I don't seem to be able to grow them worth a flip).

Enjoy the experiment! :)
