Red Onions

If you remember, I had issues with my red onions, where I did not seperate the bulbs from each cell they were growing in. Well, they've since been seperated and have been thriving ever since, both in my garden and in pots. My question is, when do I know they are ready to pick. On a few, I've noticed the 'bulb' is visible from the surface, and I don't see that familiar red skin you usually see. Or, are they just too young still?

It's been a long time since I grew onions, but IIRC, we waited for the tops to turn brown and die down before we dug them.
